Houses of Parliament

The Houses of Parliament of South Africa are located in Cape Town and consist of three main sections: the original building, completed in 1884, and additions constructed in the 1920s and 1980s. The newer additions house the National Assembly, which is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of South Africa, while the original building houses the National Council of Provinces, which is the upper house of Parliament.

The original parliament building was designed in a Neoclassical style, incorporating features of Cape Dutch architecture, while the later additions were designed to blend with the original building. The Houses of Parliament have been declared a National Heritage Site by the South African Heritage Resources Agency and given grade 1 national heritage status, the highest grade set by SAHRA. Parliament House was severely damaged by a large fire that broke out on 2 January 2022.

The Houses of Parliament are located in the uppermost corner of Company Gardens, with their entrance on Parliament Street. The British first created a legislative council for the Cape in 1835, but it was the agitation over a London proposal to transform the colony into a convict settlement that led to the establishment of a fully representative parliament in 1853

Today, Cape Town is a modern city with high-rise office buildings and pedestrian malls, and the Houses of Parliament are a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike
