About Kayaking Cape Town
Wanderer does not own kayaks or run the paddles ourselves. Every session is delivered by a specialist third-party operator with certified skippers, well-maintained double sea kayaks, buoyancy aids and radios. Operator, launch point and route are confirmed at booking based on wind, swell and party size.
The Simon's Town paddle is the classic Cape Town kayak experience. Launching from the sheltered end of the harbour, you head south along the coast toward the Boulders Beach African penguin colony, often paddling within metres of the birds as they swim, dive and preen on the rocks. Dolphins pass through Simon's Bay regularly, and between June and November the Southern Right whales calve in the area — a chance to share the water with them from a respectful distance.
The Atlantic Seaboard paddle from Three Anchor Bay is a very different experience — a coastal glide past Green Point Lighthouse, Mouille Point and, on calm days, out toward Robben Island with the full sweep of Table Mountain behind you. Cape Fur Seals and Bank Cormorants are frequent companions. Wanderer will help you pick the launch that best fits your dates and the day's forecast.
The kayaks used are wide, stable double sea kayaks — designed for people with no paddling experience. Your guide gives a short briefing on the beach, then leads the group at a relaxed pace, calling out marine life and stopping for photos. Most guests find the effort well within reach; children from around six years old can typically paddle with a parent, subject to the operator's assessment.
This is a wind- and swell-dependent activity. Cape Town's winds can shift a paddle by a couple of hours or move the launch from one side of the peninsula to the other. Wanderer coordinates that call with the operator and keeps the rest of your day flowing — a private chauffeured transfer means you are never stranded at a launch that has been stood down.
Kayaking pairs beautifully with a Cape Peninsula day tour — an early paddle at Simon's Town, then a chauffeured drive on to Boulders Beach, Cape Point and Chapman's Peak, with lunch in Kalk Bay or Noordhoek along the way. Wanderer will sequence the day so the kayak lands you back on the beach in time to keep the itinerary moving.
As always, Wanderer is the single point of contact — chauffeur, timing, operator liaison and rebooking — while the specialist marine operator focuses on the safety, briefing and quality of the paddle itself.
