WANDERER TOURS AND TRAVEL

The essential Cape Town day — private, unhurried, unforgettable.

Few day trips on earth pack as much into a single drive as the Cape Peninsula. In under nine hours you cross from the Atlantic Seaboard to False Bay, hug the cliffs of Chapman's Peak, stand at the Cape of Good Hope and share a beach with a colony of African penguins. The Wanderer private Cape Point Tour is a personalised experience built to give you all of that — without the rush, the shared microphones or the rigid stops of a coach tour. If you're a first-time visitor to Cape Town, this is the tour we recommend you do first: it gives you a strong feel for the shape of the city and a clear sense of which coastlines, villages and viewpoints you'll want to return to.

We begin on the Atlantic Seaboard, tracing the coastline past Mouille Point, Green Point, Sea Point, Fresnaye, Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay, Bakoven and Llandudno on the way to Hout Bay's working harbour. From Hout Bay you can add a short Seal Island boat trip to Duiker Island to see the African fur seal colony, or continue straight onto Chapman's Peak Drive — nine kilometres of cliffside curves that consistently rank among the most beautiful coastal roads in the world.

Inside the Cape Point Nature Reserve, fynbos, sea cliffs and possible sightings of baboons, ostriches and antelope such as eland or bontebok set the scene for the day's two iconic stops: the old Cape Point lighthouse — reached on foot or via the Flying Dutchman Funicular — and the famous wooden sign at the Cape of Good Hope on the Cape Peninsula.

In the afternoon we drive across to Boulders Beach near Simon's Town, where wooden boardwalks lead above a protected colony of African penguins — one of only a handful of mainland breeding sites in the world. From there, the return route meanders along the False Bay coast through Simon's Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg before we drop you back at your accommodation.

What makes the Wanderer experience different is the way the day is built around you. There are no other guests on board. If a viewpoint asks for an extra ten minutes, you take them. If the wind closes Cape Point, we re-order the day rather than abandon it. If you want a long Constantia wine lunch on the way home, we build it in. Your guide reads the day in real time so you don't have to.

The vehicle matters. Our late-model Mercedes-Benz sedans, SUVs and V-Class minivans are quiet, properly air-conditioned and comfortable on a long Peninsula day. Cape weather can move from beach to clifftop in an hour and a good vehicle is the difference between a memorable day and a tiring one.

Our guides are locally based and chosen for the way they tell a story. They know the back roads around Chapman's Peak, the photographer's hour at Cape Point, which side of the penguin colony is quieter at midday and where the best baker is in Simon's Town. They also know when to step back and let the view do the talking.

Most guests pair the Peninsula day with a Cape Town City Tour and a Cape Winelands Tour to build the full Cape Town introduction.

Cape Point Tour vs Cape Peninsula Tour — What's the Difference?

Cape Point Tour

Refers to the main destination — Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope inside the Cape Point Nature Reserve, one of the Cape Peninsula's most dramatic landmarks.

Cape Peninsula Tour

Refers to the full scenic loop around the Cape Peninsula — Atlantic Seaboard, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach and the False Bay return.

We combine both into a single private day — Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach, Chapman's Peak and the coastal villages — so you don't have to choose.

Cape Point & Cape Peninsula Tour FAQs

What is included in the Cape Point Tour?
A private local guide, a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, hotel or cruise terminal pickup and drop-off, the Chapman's Peak toll and a fully personalised itinerary. Entry fees for the Cape Point Nature Reserve, Boulders Beach and the Cape Point Funicular, and the optional Seal Island boat trip, are confirmed at booking — some are included on certain packages and added at cost on others.
How long is the Cape Point Tour?
Most guests spend around 8 to 9 hours on the road, including stops. Because the tour is private, we can shorten or extend the day around your interests, energy level and what you'd like to see.
Is this a private tour?
Yes. Every Wanderer Cape Point Tour is private — just your party, your guide and a luxury vehicle. We do not run shared group tours.
Can we customise the itinerary?
Absolutely. The classic Peninsula route is a starting point. We can add a Constantia wine stop, swap in the Ostrich Farm, build in extra photo time at Cape Point, or focus the day around wildlife, photography or relaxed pacing.
Does the tour include Boulders Beach and the penguins?
Yes — Boulders Beach is a standard stop on our Cape Peninsula / Cape Point Tour, with time on the boardwalks above the African penguin colony.
Does the tour include the Cape of Good Hope?
Yes. We visit both Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope inside the Table Mountain National Park, including the famous wooden sign for the classic photo.
Can we add Table Mountain to the day?
Table Mountain is normally paired with a separate City Tour day rather than the full Peninsula loop, so neither experience feels rushed. We can plan a back-to-back two-day combination.
Can we visit Groot Constantia on the way?
Yes — a relaxed lunchtime tasting at Groot Constantia is a popular add-on on the return leg of the Cape Point Tour.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Cape Town weather changes quickly. Your guide reshapes the day as needed — reordering stops, sheltering in Simon's Town or Kalk Bay, or moving certain experiences to another day in your itinerary if the wind closes Cape Point.
Can children join the Cape Point Tour?
Yes. The Peninsula day is family-friendly. We provide child seats on request and pace the day around younger travellers, with built-in stops at Boulders Beach and a relaxed lunch.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes — we collect you from any Cape Town hotel, guesthouse, private villa, the airport or the V&A Cruise Terminal at no extra cost within the metro area.
Can cruise passengers book this tour?
Yes. The Cape Point Tour is a popular day for cruise passengers stopping in Cape Town. We collect from the V&A Cruise Terminal and time the day around your sailing.
Is the Cape Point Tour suitable for first-time visitors?
It is the most popular first-time-visitor day in Cape Town. In one private day you see the coastline, the penguins, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.
What should we wear?
Comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing. Cape Point is exposed and can be windy and cool even on warm days, so a light jacket is sensible year-round.
Can we include Chapman's Peak Drive?
Yes — Chapman's Peak Drive is a signature part of the Cape Point Tour and is included on almost every itinerary. The toll and open-road status are subject to weather and road conditions, and your guide will reshape the route on the day if the road is closed.
Can we add the Seal Island / Duiker Island boat trip?
Yes. A short boat trip from Hout Bay Harbour to the African fur seal colony at Duiker Island can be added when sea and operator conditions allow. It's confirmed at booking and cannot be guaranteed on stormy or high-wind days.
Can we add activities like kayaking, seal snorkelling or Table Mountain?
Yes. Popular optional add-ons include kayaking with African penguins, seal snorkelling in Hout Bay, the Table Mountain Cableway, ziplining in Constantia and a Groot Constantia wine or chocolate pairing. Add-ons are subject to availability, weather, timing, operator schedules and how they fit into the Peninsula route.
Is Cape Point the southernmost point of Africa?
No. Cape Point was once commonly associated with the southern tip of Africa, but the actual southernmost point is Cape Agulhas, roughly 200 km to the east. Cape Point remains one of the Cape Peninsula's most dramatic landmarks — with cliffs, ocean views, fynbos and wildlife — but it is not the southern tip of the continent.
Do the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet at Cape Point?
No. The official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans is at Cape Agulhas, further east. At Cape Point you get the Atlantic-facing peninsula, the False Bay coastline and dramatic ocean views — but not the geographic ocean boundary.
