Overview

What to expect on your Cape Town City Tour – Private Half-Day & Full-Day Tours

Cape Town is one of the world's great port cities — where 350 years of colonial, Cape Malay and apartheid-era history sit alongside working harbours, mountain viewpoints and some of South Africa's most important museums. This private Cape Town City Tour is designed for guests who want to understand the Mother City in a single day, with a local Wanderer guide and a route shaped around your time.

Pick the half-day city-focused route if you have a shorter window or a cruise call, or upgrade to the full-day city & heritage tour to add District Six, a Bo-Kaap cooking experience, Table Mountain (weather permitting) or a relaxed V&A Waterfront finish. Both formats are fully private — your own guide, your own luxury Mercedes-Benz, your own pace.

If you'd rather focus on Cape Point and the Peninsula, or the Cape Winelands, those are separate products with their own itineraries. See our Cape Point Tour and Cape Winelands Tour, or ask us to design a multi-day Cape Town combination.

A typical day on tour

Your route is flexible and can be adjusted on the day, but a typical private tour may follow this flow. Timings depend on traffic, opening hours and how long you'd like to spend at each stop.

  1. 1

Your private Wanderer guide collects you from your hotel, villa, the airport or the V&A Cruise Terminal in a luxury Mercedes-Benz. We confirm the day's flow and any priority stops before setting off.

Start at the 17th-century star fort — South Africa's oldest surviving colonial building — before walking out onto the Grand Parade in front of City Hall.

  3. 3

  7. 7

Explore Cape Town with a Professional Local Guide

Every Wanderer city tour is led by a professional Cape Town driver-guide who lives here — the same guides our guests name in their Google reviews, including Ronald, Luthando and Gino. They combine day-to-day local knowledge of traffic, weather and attraction opening times with the history behind Bo-Kaap, District Six, the Castle of Good Hope and the Company's Garden.

Your guide plans the route with you before you set off: how much time you'd like in museums, whether you want a Bo-Kaap food stop, how much walking suits your group, and whether to add Table Mountain or the V&A Waterfront. Because the vehicle is yours for the day, the itinerary can be reshaped at any point.

Guide names, languages and specialist interests are matched to your group when we confirm your booking — tell us what matters most to you and we'll allocate the best-suited guide available on your date.

Frequently asked questions

Questions guests ask before booking

What is included in the Cape Town City Tour?
A private local Wanderer guide, a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, hotel or cruise terminal pickup and drop-off, a fully personalised city itinerary and bottled water on board. Attraction entry fees — Castle of Good Hope, District Six Museum, Table Mountain Cableway, Robben Island and museum entries — are confirmed at booking and added where they aren't part of a packaged rate.
How long is the Cape Town City Tour?
The tour runs as either a half-day (roughly 4 hours) or a full day (roughly 7–8 hours). Because it's private, you choose the length and we shape the route around it.
Is this a private tour?
Yes. Every Wanderer Cape Town City Tour is private — just your party, your guide and a luxury vehicle. We do not run shared group tours.
Can we customise the itinerary?
Absolutely. The classic route is a starting point. We can weight the day around history and heritage, Cape Malay food and culture in the Bo-Kaap, art and museums, family-friendly stops or photography and viewpoints.
Does the tour include Bo-Kaap?
Yes. Bo-Kaap is a signature stop on the Cape Town City Tour — we walk the pastel-painted streets, tell the story of the Cape Malay community and can optionally add a traditional cooking experience or samoosa tasting.
Does the tour include District Six?
Yes. We include the District Six context in the city centre and can add a visit to the District Six Museum for a deeper, respectful understanding of the forced removals under apartheid.
Can we visit Table Mountain on the same day?
Yes — Table Mountain can be added to the Cape Town City Tour, subject to weather and cableway operating conditions. If the cableway is closed, your guide will reshape the day and, where possible, move Table Mountain to another day of your itinerary.
Can we add Robben Island?
Yes, subject to ferry schedules and ticket availability. Robben Island runs on set sailings, so we plan it in advance and build the rest of the city day around your ferry time.
Can we include the V&A Waterfront?
Yes. The V&A Waterfront is a popular way to end the city day — for lunch, harbour views, the Two Oceans Aquarium, shopping or as the departure point for Robben Island.
Is the tour suitable for families?
Yes. The Cape Town City Tour is family-friendly. We shorten walking segments, add kid-friendly stops such as the Two Oceans Aquarium and pace the day around younger travellers. Child seats are available on request.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes — we collect you from any Cape Town hotel, guesthouse, private villa, the airport or the V&A Cruise Terminal at no extra cost within the metro area.
Can cruise passengers book this tour?
Yes. Cape Town City Tour is one of the most popular options for cruise passengers docked at the V&A Cruise Terminal. We build the day around your ship's departure time and get you back on board comfortably before all-aboard.
How much does a Cape Town City Tour cost?
The tour is priced per private group rather than per seat, so the cost depends on group size, whether you choose the half-day or full-day format, the vehicle required and any attraction entry fees you add. Send us your dates and guest numbers and we'll send an exact written quote.
What is the difference between the half-day and full-day tour?
The half-day tour runs about 4 hours and covers the city highlights — Bo-Kaap, the Castle of Good Hope, the Grand Parade and City Hall, Company's Garden and a Signal Hill viewpoint. The full-day tour runs about 8 hours and adds deeper museum visits such as District Six, a Bo-Kaap food experience, a lunch stop and optionally Table Mountain or the V&A Waterfront.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes. The tour is family-friendly — we shorten walking segments, pace the day around younger travellers and can add stops such as the Two Oceans Aquarium. Child seats are available on request.
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Some stops are step-free while others, such as parts of the Bo-Kaap and the Castle of Good Hope, involve cobbles or stairs. Tell us your mobility requirements when you enquire and we'll confirm which vehicle and route we can arrange for your group.
Is lunch included?
Meals and drinks are not included in the tour price. We build a lunch stop into the full-day itinerary and your guide will recommend options to suit your budget and tastes.
What happens if Table Mountain is closed?
The cableway closes in high wind or poor visibility and this is never within our control. If it is closed, your guide reshapes the day around the remaining city highlights and, where your itinerary allows, we try to move Table Mountain to another day.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are set out in our terms and conditions and are confirmed in writing with your quote before any payment is made.
