Hermanus Whale Walk

The Hermanus Whale Walk, also known as the Hermanus Cliff Path Walk is a popular activity in Hermanus. The land drops off sharply into a deep bay below where whales come to cruise or play, sometimes as little as 20 metres away from the shore. To ensure that visitors are kept in the know, a designated ‘whale crier’ patrols the trail, sounding his kelp horn when he spots these majestic ocean mammals.

More About Hermanus Whale Walk

  1. Prime Whale Watching: Hermanus is renowned as one of the best land-based whale-watching destinations in the world, and the Whale Walk provides the perfect vantage point to observe these magnificent creatures. From June to December, southern right whales migrate to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young, offering visitors a chance to witness their awe-inspiring displays of breaching, tail-slapping, and spouting.

  2. Scenic Beauty: The Whale Walk meanders along the rugged cliffs of Walker Bay, offering unparalleled views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes. From towering cliffs to secluded coves, each turn of the trail reveals a new vista to admire and explore, making it a photographer’s paradise and a nature lover’s dream.

  3. Rich Biodiversity: In addition to southern right whales, Walker Bay is home to a diverse array of marine life, including dolphins, seals, and a variety of seabirds. As you walk along the trail, keep an eye out for these charismatic creatures, as well as the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this coastal environment.

  4. Cultural Heritage: The Whale Walk is not only a scenic trail but also a journey through history and culture. Along the way, you’ll encounter informative signage and interpretive panels that highlight the area’s rich maritime heritage, as well as the conservation efforts dedicated to protecting its natural wonders.
