Garden Route Guide
Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay — 'Plett' to locals — is the Garden Route's classic coastal base: long, wide beaches, the Robberg Peninsula, marine viewing offshore, and forests and rivers a short drive inland. It's an easy place to spend two or three nights.
About Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay sits about 30 minutes east of Knysna and is one of the Garden Route's most-loved coastal towns. The beaches are long, warm and family-friendly, and the Robberg Peninsula — a nature reserve running out into the sea — has some of the finest coastal walking on the route.
Offshore, marine life is a big draw. Dolphins are seen year-round, and whales pass through in season (roughly June to November). Marine viewing tours run from the town harbour, with sightings always subject to weather and nature.
Inland, Nature's Valley, the Keurbooms River and the surrounding forests offer easy contrast to the beach. Wanderer typically pairs Plett with either Knysna as separate two-night bases, or uses it as the main coastal stop on shorter itineraries.

Itinerary fit
How Plettenberg Bay fits into a private Garden Route itinerary
Plett is a natural second coastal base after Knysna on a 5–7 day Garden Route tour, typically for two or three nights. Combined with Knysna, this gives you two complementary bases within a short drive of each other.
For shorter itineraries, we sometimes make Plett the single Garden Route base, using it for beach mornings and day drives to Knysna and Tsitsikamma. Marine trips work well here because the harbour is small and easy to time around your day.
