Garden Route Guide
Knysna
Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best-known towns — a lagoon, dramatic headlands (the Heads), waterfront restaurants and forest walks a short drive inland. It's a natural central base for two or three nights on a private Garden Route itinerary from Cape Town.
About Knysna
Knysna sits roughly halfway between Mossel Bay and Storms River, wrapped around a large tidal lagoon that opens to the sea through the Knysna Heads — two sandstone cliffs that frame every postcard of the town. The waterfront is walkable and low-key, with restaurants, oyster bars and boat trips out onto the lagoon.
Beyond the lagoon, Knysna is surrounded by ancient indigenous forest — Diepwalle, Goudveld and the Garden of Eden all sit within easy reach for short walks. The town works particularly well as a central Garden Route base because Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness and Tsitsikamma are all within a comfortable day's driving.
Wanderer builds Knysna into private Garden Route tours as a two- or three-night stop, matching accommodation to your travel style and pacing daily drives so you have time to enjoy the town rather than just pass through.

Itinerary fit
How Knysna fits into a private Garden Route itinerary
For a 5–7 day Garden Route tour, Knysna is typically our second base after Mossel Bay or Wilderness. Two nights lets you enjoy the lagoon and a full forest morning; three nights adds space for a Plett or Tsitsikamma day out.
For shorter 3–4 day tours, we often use Knysna as the single central overnight, driving out to Plett or Tsitsikamma during the day and returning to the same accommodation each night. This reduces packing and gives a proper base without losing route time.
