Constantia Wine Tour

Constantia Wine Tour

A private Constantia wine tour is the easiest way to taste world-class Cape wine without leaving Cape Town. The Constantia Valley sits on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, roughly fifteen minutes from the city, and is the oldest wine-producing region in the Southern Hemisphere — the original Groot Constantia farm was granted to Simon van der Stel in 1685. Wanderer arranges the day door-to-door in a chauffeured Mercedes-Benz.

Overview

About Constantia Wine Tour

Constantia is famous for cool-climate whites — Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and old-vine white blends — and for the legendary Vin de Constance, the sweet Muscat de Frontignan wine that Napoleon, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens all wrote about. The valley is small, green and shaded, and the estates are close together, which makes it perfectly suited to a relaxed half-day rather than a full Winelands drive.

Wanderer does not own estates. We work with a hand-picked list — Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Steenberg, Constantia Glen and Beau Constantia — and book each tasting privately for your group. Your guide can weight the day toward historic Cape Dutch estates, the modern architectural cellars or the Sauvignon Blanc specialists depending on what interests you.

Each stop is around 45–75 minutes: a private tutored tasting of five or six wines, often paired with charcuterie or chocolate, and time to walk the manor gardens or the vineyard. Two estates plus an optional light lunch fits comfortably into a morning or an afternoon; three estates makes a slower half-day. Because the estates are so close, driving between them takes minutes.

The Constantia valley is a beautiful add-on to a Cape Peninsula or Cape Point day. A common pattern is to combine a morning at Cape Point, Boulders Beach or Chapman's Peak with a Constantia tasting on the way back to the city — your Wanderer chauffeur handles the timing so nothing feels rushed. Equally, a Constantia afternoon closes a Table Mountain morning perfectly.

Lunch options range from a light platter at Groot Constantia to the fine-dining restaurants at Buitenverwachting, Steenberg or La Colombe (at Silvermist). Lunch is arranged in advance based on your preferences and dietary needs, and typically paid at the restaurant on the day.

As always, Wanderer is your single point of contact — chauffeur, estate bookings, lunch reservation and timing all sit with us. Pricing is quoted according to route, group size and inclusions, and final estate selection depends on availability, routing and guest preferences.
