Overview

About Private Wine Tour Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the world's great wine cities — 300+ years of history across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia, world-class Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon country, and estates that range from 350-year-old family farms to contemporary architectural showpieces. A private day is the honest way to see it.

Every Wanderer private wine tour is built around a conversation. You tell us what you like drinking, what you don't, whether you'd rather focus on the wine, the food, the architecture or the walking. We build the day. All bookings, timings and logistics are handled invisibly in the background.

The result is one of the most requested — and most repeated — days in our calendar. First-timers get an unhurried, well-paced introduction to the Cape Winelands. Return visitors get access to small producers, library tastings and cellar experiences most tour operators can't arrange.

Good to know

Important notes

  • Private, chauffeur-driven — you never need to worry about the drive home.
  • We build in water and food between tastings — a full day of wine is easier with pacing.
  • Non-drinkers, designated drivers and children can join and enjoy the day with alternative pairings.
  • Cellars are cold year-round — bring a light layer even in summer.
  • The Winelands sit at altitude and are exposed — sunscreen and a hat matter, even on cool days.

Frequently asked

Questions about Private Wine Tour Cape Town

What makes a Wanderer private wine tour different?

It's fully private, chauffeur-driven, and built around your specific interests — the estates, wines, food, and pace are all planned around you rather than a fixed group itinerary. Your Wanderer guide knows the estate teams and can arrange cellar visits, library tastings and small experiences that aren't available on a group tour.

Which region should we visit — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Constantia?

Depends on what you like. Stellenbosch is bigger, older, focused on serious reds and Chenin Blanc — the best all-round option. Franschhoek is smaller, French-influenced, famous for Cap Classique and its restaurants. Constantia is 15 minutes from the city, oldest of all, ideal for a shorter half-day. Wanderer helps you pick.

How many estates can we visit in a day?

Three or four is a comfortable full day. Two or three with a proper lunch and a cellar tour is often more enjoyable than five rushed stops. We plan for depth, not tick-boxes.

Do you include lunch?

Yes — a vineyard lunch at one of the estates is a core part of the day. We pre-book restaurants to match your food preferences (fine dining, family-style, vegetarian, halal, kosher, etc.).

Can non-drinkers and children join?

Absolutely. We arrange non-alcoholic pairings, food-only tastings, cellar tours and family-friendly estates so everyone in the group has a great day. Ask about our child-friendly winelands and non-drinker options.

How long is a typical private wine tour?

About 8 hours door-to-door — pickup 09:00, first estate around 10:00, two morning tastings, lunch, one or two afternoon tastings, back at your hotel by 18:00.

What vehicle do we travel in?

A private Mercedes — usually a GL SUV or V-Class Viano depending on group size — with a Wanderer chauffeur-guide. Bottled water, snacks and Wi-Fi in the car.

Can you ship wines home for us?

Yes. We work with specialist wine shippers who handle export documentation and customs for the US, UK, EU, Australia and beyond. Buying at the estate and shipping is far more reliable than trying to check bottles yourself.

How much does a private wine tour cost?

Pricing depends on group size, region, estates and lunch venue. Get in touch with your dates and interests and we'll send a tailored quote — usually within a working day.

Can we combine a wine tour with other Cape Town experiences?

Yes. Popular combinations include a wine tour paired with a Cape Point day, a Franschhoek helicopter flight, or a two-day Winelands overnight. We build multi-day itineraries end-to-end.
