Overview
About Overnight Safari from Cape Town
Wanderer's confirmed overnight-safari reserve is Aquila Private Game Reserve, in the Karoo roughly 2.5 hours from Cape Town — quick to reach, established Big Five sightings, comfortable lodge suites. Other partner reserves may be offered subject to availability at the time of booking. The final reserve, lodge and inclusions are confirmed at booking.
The shape is straightforward: private Mercedes-Benz collects you from Cape Town late morning or midday, we drive to the reserve, check in and enjoy a light lunch, then an afternoon/sunset game drive of around 2.5 hours ending with sundowners in the bush. Dinner at the lodge (often a boma / open-fire setting), overnight in a safari suite, wake for the morning game drive at first light, breakfast at the lodge, and back to Cape Town by late afternoon.
Two game drives — one in golden afternoon light with cats active, one in cold clear morning light with predators finishing their night's hunt — dramatically increases your Big Five sighting rate compared to a single day drive. The overnight also means the reserve empties of day-trippers and you experience it as an overnight guest, not a visitor.
The reserves are all malaria-free and family-friendly. Age minimums for safari vehicles vary by reserve (usually 6 or 8 minimum for open drives; younger children have private-vehicle options). Wanderer confirms per booking.
Wanderer does not own the reserves — we work with them. The lodge experience, ranger, vehicle and game drives are the reserve's. Wanderer arranges the day around it: private Mercedes-Benz, timing, coordination, WhatsApp concierge and rebooking if needed.
This is our recommended safari shape for guests with two spare days in a Cape Town holiday. It's a genuine safari — not just a Big Five checklist — and pairs beautifully with the classic Cape Town + Winelands programme. For a longer, deeper safari, see our multi-day safari page. For Big Five in a single day, see the full-day safari.
