About Paarl Wine Tour
Paarl was settled by Huguenot and Dutch farmers in the late 1600s and today spans a wide, warm valley between the Simonsberg and the Drakenstein mountains. Because the district is less busy than Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the estates feel more spacious and the tastings less rushed — it is a favourite for guests who prefer a slower, more agricultural feel to their winelands day. Paarl also pairs beautifully with a short Franschhoek loop.
Wanderer does not own estates. We work with a hand-picked list — Fairview (of goat-tower and Goats do Roam fame), Spice Route, Backsberg, Rupert & Rothschild, Nederburg, Anura and others — and book each tasting privately for your group. Your guide can weight the day toward Rhône blends, cheese-and-wine pairings, family-run cellars or a Paarl-plus-Franschhoek combination.
Each stop is around 60–90 minutes: a private tutored tasting of five or six wines, often paired with cheese, charcuterie or chocolate, and time to walk the vineyards. Three estates plus a farm lunch is the natural shape of the day; four estates suits keen tasters. Your guide tracks the clock so every visit feels unhurried.
Lunch in Paarl is a highlight in its own right. The Goatshed at Fairview is a Cape institution — cheese, wood-fired pizzas and Rhône-style reds under old oaks. Spice Route offers grazing platters and craft beer alongside its wines. For a fine-dining option, Rupert & Rothschild's estate lunches or a short hop to Franschhoek open up more restaurants. Lunch is arranged in advance based on your preferences and typically paid at the restaurant on the day.
A common pattern is Paarl in the morning, over into the Franschhoek Valley for the afternoon — two very different districts on one relaxed day, all coordinated by your Wanderer chauffeur. Equally, a Paarl-only day suits guests who want the farm-lunch, cheese-and-wine, agricultural feel rather than fine dining.
As always, Wanderer is your single point of contact. Pricing is quoted according to route, group size and inclusions; tasting fees, lunch and any specialist experiences are confirmed at booking; and final estate selection depends on availability, routing and guest preferences.
