Garden Route Guide
Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay is the traditional western gateway to the Garden Route — a coastal town with historic maritime roots, warm sheltered beaches, harbour views and the dramatic Cape St Blaize headland. It's where most Wanderer Garden Route itineraries first meet the sea.
About Mossel Bay
Sitting roughly 4 hours east of Cape Town, Mossel Bay is the first proper Garden Route town you reach coming from the west. The bay itself is sheltered and swimmable, and the coastline runs from working harbour and warm beaches through to the Cape St Blaize lighthouse walk on the headland.
The town's identity is tied to its history — Bartolomeu Dias landed here in 1488, and the Dias Museum on the harbour houses a full-size replica of his caravel. Beyond the museum, most guests come for the beaches, easy walking and the sense of finally being on the Garden Route.
Wanderer regularly uses Mossel Bay as a first-night stop coming out of Cape Town — an easy arrival, a beach evening and a well-paced start to the route before pushing east toward Knysna the next day.
