Wilderness is the Garden Route's slow, scenic middle chapter — long beaches, tannin-dark rivers, freshwater lakes and indigenous forest, all within a single compact stretch between Mossel Bay and Knysna. It's the town people return to when they want the Garden Route without the crowds.
About Wilderness
Wilderness sits about 15 minutes east of George and 45 minutes west of Knysna, wrapped between the sea and a system of freshwater lakes fed by the Touw and Kaaimans Rivers. The village itself is small, but the scenery around it — Map of Africa viewpoint, Dolphin's Point and the lakes region — is some of the Garden Route's most photographed.
Where Knysna and Plett have busier waterfronts, Wilderness has a slower feel: fewer restaurants, more nature. It suits travellers who want beach walks, kayaking-style river trips and forest scenery without a big-town atmosphere.
Wanderer often uses Wilderness as an alternative or additional overnight base to Knysna, particularly for guests wanting a quieter Garden Route rhythm.
