Overview
About 12 Day Cape Town & Garden Route Package
The first 4 days are the Cape Town core: Cape Town City & Table Mountain, Cape Peninsula, Winelands, and either whales or safari depending on season. From Day 5 we head east along the coast — the Garden Route has always been South Africa's classic self-drive, and doing it with a private guide is a very different experience: no navigating, no long dinner drives, no missed viewpoints.
Day 5 typically stops in Hermanus (whale capital, June–November) or Gansbaai (shark cage diving) before continuing on to Mossel Bay or Wilderness. Day 6 explores the western Garden Route — Wilderness lakes, Sedgefield markets, Knysna Heads and the estuary. Day 7 covers Plettenberg Bay — beaches, elephant sanctuary, and monkey / bird sanctuaries at Monkeyland and Birds of Eden. Day 8 crosses into Tsitsikamma National Park — Storms River suspension bridge, kayaks, indigenous forest walks, and (for the brave) the Bloukrans Bridge bungee.
Day 9 is our safari overnight — a 2-night Gondwana or Botlierskop lodge experience with morning and evening game drives, ideal placed on the return leg because you get to unwind in the bush before the drive back to Cape Town. Day 11 is the drive back through the Little Karoo (with optional Cango Caves or ostrich farm at Oudtshoorn). Day 12 is a Cape Town leisure day and departure.
The pacing genuinely works because it alternates driving days with anchored 2-night stays. You never do more than 3 hours in the car in a day, and every drive has a natural stopping point — a viewpoint, a village, a lunch.
Everything is private — one Mercedes-Benz, one Wanderer guide, one WhatsApp contact for 12 days. Accommodation is booked into our recommended lodges and hotels along the way (Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, safari lodge and Cape Town at both ends). Airport transfers both ends included.
This is Wanderer's best-value long trip — priced by vehicle for the touring, plus accommodation separately. Four-plus guest groups get exceptional per-person value.
